WHARFEDALE DISTRICT CHALLENGE CUP FINAL 18th May 2011 OTLEY TOWN 3 ILKLEY TOWN 2 Otley Town retained the District Cup, winning the cup for the third time in 5 years.
WHARFEDALE DISTRICT CHALLENGE CUP FINAL 18th May 2011 OTLEY TOWN 3 ILKLEY TOWN 2 Despite a score-line which suggests a close game, nothing could have been further from the truth as Otley Town completely dominated this game. They were in total control right up until the 80th minute when Ilkley scored a consolation goal with a speculative shot, actually their first serious shot on target, and then added a second goal with two minutes to go. However these moments only served to camouflage the gulf in class between the two sides and it was to prove too little far too late for Ilkley. Ilkey had given a great account of themselves in an earlier West Yorkshire League Cup encounter at Otley, going out only in a penalty shoot-out but for this game they were unable to make any impression against an Otley side in coruscating form. Town dictated the opening proceedings and might have scored twice before Scott Cater did so in the 25th minute. Town's leading scorer latched on to an exquisite flick by Ben Greenhow and completed his powerful burst into the box with an accurate finish. Ten minutes later Otley doubled their lead when Chris Davey's smart free kick was met on the half volley by Josh Waite. So quick was the move, the ball was in the back of the net before the Ilkley defence and keeper could move. It had been all Otley in the first half and when Luke Danskin added a third two minutes into the second period a rout was on the cards. Danskin was teed up by the excellent Cater but his calm and controlled right foot finish was technically perfect. Otley now in complete control laid siege to the Ilkley goal. Chris Davey hit a spectacular shot from fully 30 yards only to see Hirst? In the Ilkley goal pull off a fine save and Ben Greenhow in great form all night should have scored with a point blank header but somehow managed to clear the bar. Town made substitutions but it made no difference as they continued to hold sway. Cater shot over when well placed and Rob Hillas might have scored with his first touch. It looked like being a very easy night for Town but in fairness to Ilkley they never gave up and if it hadn't been for superb save by Gav Phillis in the dying seconds there may have been a sting in the tail. However anything but an Otley win would have been a total injustice as at last they managed to secure the silverware their excellent season merited. Outstanding for Otley on the night were Ben Greenhow, Luke Danskin and Man of the Match Scott Cater.

Otley Town have lifted the District Cup yet again. Seen here in the 2011 photo, is Captain, Jamie Sims proudly lifting the cup for his team after victory over Ilkley A.F.C.
Town played last night in the semi final of the League Cup at Glasshoughton Welfare (Northern Counties East neutral ground) against fellow W.Y. Premier side Leeds City, and despite going down early to a Leeds City goal within 5 minutes of the kick off, Town replied in style within 5 minutes with a long range free kick from Chris Davey from 3 years inside the touchline and about 35 yards out. Nobody, including the keeper, expected the shot on target, and it rocketed into the top right hand corner of the net. A further goal from Chris meant that Town were leaders 2-1 at half time, and held on to the lead in the second half despite the best efforts of the Leeds team to break down the Otley defence with some near misses and great escapes for Town. This means town are now in three finals, The League Cup, the District Cup and the County Challenge cup, all to be played in the next few weeks at various venues. Enquries about these games (which all being well, will be on 29th April, 2nd May and 5th May) can be directed to Acting Secretary Steve Norfolk 07860-242089 or steve.norfolk@freightair.co.uk
